Abstract: The Alberta Strategy for Patient OrientedResearch (AbSPORU) Support Unit was established in 2015 using funding from CIHRand Alberta Innovates and is a partnership between the Universities of Alberta,Calgary, and Lethbridge as well as Alberta Health Services and otherstakeholders in Alberta’s Research & Innovation ecosystem.  AbSPORU created infrastructure to enablepatient engagement in research, improved and expedited data access and datamanagement, provides the research community with training opportunities andexpert methodological, data management and statistical support, and is workingto enhance the integration of research into clinical practice and policy makingthrough our investments in knowledge translation and implementationscience.  In our first 5 years, AbSPORUbuilt capacity, capabilities, and partnerships for patient-orientedresearch (POR) in Alberta andworked to increase the quantity and quality of POR. In our next 5 years, AbSPORU will build on these partnerships andexpertise to support Alberta’s integrated Learning Health System with the goal of achieving the quadrupleaim: improving patient/provider experience, improving health outcomes forpatients and the broader population, and improving health careefficiency/cost-effectiveness.  In thislecture Dr. McAlister will review AbSPORU with a focus on those elements mostrelevant to the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute.
