Job Description

The Lead Machine Learning Scientist (Lead MLS) brings scientific excellence and industry best practices in applied ML to the Industry team. They bridge the gap between business opportunities and ML, providing technical oversight on projects. They are an active participant in product development and delivery, providing insight into their area of expertise and fostering interns, residents and machine learning scientists’ development in the organization. They also support Amii's internal teams as subject matter experts based on their technical specialties and applied machine learning experience.

In addition to guiding industry partners, the Lead MLS will support fundamental research through partnerships with Amii Fellows and their students, working with one of the world’s best ML departments.

The role focuses on achieving excellence in three principal accountabilities:

  • Program and Product Development: Work in collaboration with a Product Lead to develop all science-related products and services in a dedicated program stream.
  • Industry Excellence: Provide science thought-leadership and guidance in a dedicated program stream or industry area; as well as work with Amii clients to advance their ML projects and capabilities)
  • Research: Support the advancement of ML research

This role will report to the Product Lead of the Industry team.

What you’ll do

  • Work with clients’ technical teams as a coach and subject matter expert for industry AI/ML best practices
  • Lead the development, ownership, and execution of applied machine learning elements of the program and product roadmap
  • Act as a functional supervisor to machine learning scientists, interns and residents, review and revise their work, and manage approvals as appropriate
  • Work in an agile environment and continuously review the business needs, prioritize, outline milestones and deliverables, and identify opportunities and risks
  • Collaborate with Amii researchers and students on machine learning research

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Machine Learning or related field with equivalent experience in data science or applied machine learning
  • Strong fundamentals and understanding of theoretical and applied machine learning
  • 6+ years of experience working on applied machine learning projects in industry
  • 4+ years of people management experience with a demonstrated record of guiding, coaching, and empowering a team to do their best work
  • Ability to confidently guide client conversations and communicate complex technical topics to all stakeholders
  • Up-to-date knowledge of data science best practices in industry and strong engineering and analytical skills
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience deploying machine learning models with production-quality code in industry
  • Experience with DevOps and tools such as cloud platforms, containerization, CI/CD, etc
  • Have led a team of machine learning scientists/data scientists
  • Experience working through and contributing to various stages of the product development lifecycle
  • Theoretical knowledge and practical experience with advanced statistical and machine learning analysis techniques
