Job Purpose and Accountabilities

The Machine Learning Engineer (MLE) serves as a key member of the Industry Team and an active participant in Amii achieving its vision of making AI/ML key drivers for economic success for companies in Alberta.

The Machine Learning Engineer uses their applied industry experience in deployment and operationalization of ML solutions in production environments to direct the research and development efforts of Amii Industry Partners and Clients. They bridge the gap between business opportunities and applied ML methods to provide direction and oversight on technical projects. They advise clients along the entire machine learning journey from scoping to model deployment and productionization. This includes making informed decisions about what the data requirements are, what modelling techniques should be tested, how solutions should be deployed and monitored, and how success will be evaluated.

In addition to providing guidance to industry partners, the MLE will support fundamental research through partnerships with Amii Fellows and their students, working with one of the best ML departments in the world.

The MLE empowers Amii clients with the knowledge and skills they need to advance on the AI Adoption Spectrum by specializing in ML deployment expertise, which will complement Amii’s expertise in ML modelling and research. They support Amii's internal teams as subject matter experts based on their MLOps experience.

The role focuses on achieving excellence in three main accountabilities:

  • Industry Engagement: working with Amii clients to advance their ML projects and capabilities
  • Stakeholder satisfaction: supporting Amii staff as subject matter experts
  • Research: supporting the advancement of ML research

Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science or related field with equivalent experience in Data Science
  • 2 or more years of experience developing machine learning models in an applied setting.
  • Must have 2 or more years experience deploying machine learning models with production-quality code in industry
  • Extensive experience with ML frameworks, platforms and tools, and expert knowledge with at least one tool stack
  • Experience and comfort with DevOps and tools such as cloud platforms, containerization, CI/CD, etc
  • Proficient in at least one programming language eg: Python, Java, C++ or R
  • Familiarity with at least two of: Tensorflow, Keras, PyTorch and Sklearn
  • Ability to communicate on technical topics with a non-technical audience
  • General understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of a range of ML techniques across supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and reinforcement learning
  • Up-to-date knowledge and strong engineering and analytical skills
  • Industry experience in agriculture, health, or energy a plus
