EDMONTON, AB (August 19, 2021) – The Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) is offering 20 scholarships for the Machine Learning Technician Certification, a nine-week program that empowers participants to gain new skills and abilities toward technical careers in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. The scholarships will cover the full cost of registration with a focus on giving access to individuals who are typically underrepresented in STEM fields, who are recent immigrants to Canada or who live in rural settings. These scholarships are available in the Fall 2021 cohort, which takes place live online from September 21 to November 19, 2021. Interested individuals can apply online at https://www.amii.ca/events/ML_Technician_Certificate_Fall_2021/
“At Amii, we work to inspire world-changing machine intelligence for good and for all. These scholarships are one way of fulfilling that mission by providing greater access to job-ready training in some of the world’s most in-demand careers. Our Machine Learning Technician Certification gives candidates a leg up through a science-based approach to AI and by focusing on the real-world applicability of these advanced technologies,” says Joseph Pedrola, Product Owner – Training at Amii.

The Machine Learning Technician Certification helps participants develop a machine learning perspective on business problems, combining the statistical, mathematical and computational knowledge and skill sets that are necessary to build a first machine learning proof-of-concept. Learners experience all stages of a machine learning project: from problem definition and data preparation, through model selection and tuning, to model evaluation based on business outcome.
Designed to mirror the experience of developing an AI solution in a business setting, the project-based course takes a blended learning approach with live online lectures, videos programming labs and groupwork, culminating in an end-of-course capstone group project. Previous cohorts have worked to develop solutions for business problems across a variety of industries, including avionics and advanced manufacturing, natural sciences and the environment, travel and tourism and energy.
Modern businesses recognize the transformative power of AI but are also facing a severe shortage of skilled workers. The demand for AI and machine learning expertise is growing across all industries. Through the marriage of domain expertise, a key understanding of the science of machine learning and foundational technical skills in AI, companies can gain their competitive advantage. Amii’s Machine Learning Technician Certification helps workers be part of that competitive advantage.
