The 58th Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) took place online this year from July 5 to 10. This premier international conference for the field of computational linguistics covers a broad spectrum of research areas regarding computational approaches to natural language.
Fellow and Canada CIFAR AI Chair at Amii, Lili Mou (also an Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta) hosted one of eight tutorials featured at this year’s conference. The tutorial was co-presented by Olga Vechtomova, Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo.
The tutorial, “Stylized Text Generation: Approaches and Applications,” provides a comprehensive literature review of text generation -- its applications in both natural language processing and stylized text generation, which involves modelling and manipulating the style of the generated text. The tutorial then presents different settings of stylized text generation such as style-conditioned generation, style-transfer generation and style-adversarial generation. Mou also presents ML methods for each setting and current approaches for evaluating stylized text generation systems. The tutorial concludes with a discussion on the challenges of stylized text generation and future directions of research.
