December News: AI and the Future of Food

Hey there,

One of the things that drives us here at Amii is helping achieve the potential that artificial intelligence has to help fuel breakthroughs in new scientific domains. 

That’s why we’re excited to announce a research collaboration with New Harvest to explore the applications of AI and machine learning in cellular agriculture. 

We’re eager for this partnership to drive forward both AI and the science behind making animal products from cell cultures rather than traditional ranching and animal husbandry. That could have enormous implications for creating a safer, more sustainable food industry. 

It’s an exciting way to cap off what has been a very busy year at Amii. Speaking of which, we’re taking some time this month to look back at some of our favourite moments of 2022. So, check out our social media (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram), where we’ll be sharing “The Best of Amii 2022” until the end of December. 

It’s been inspiring to see all the enthusiasm and vibrance in the AI community this year. I’m looking forward to everything that 2023 will bring — especially when we all get together for Upper Bound, May 23 - 26. Can’t wait to see you there!

Industry & Community Updates:

• Our research collaboration with New Harvest, supported by Schmidt Futures, will drive advancement in AI and cellular agriculture.
• We're getting into the holiday mood with some tree decorating in the Amii offices. 
• This month, we got the chance to host DemoCamp's return from a two-year hiatus in our new second-floor space. 
• Amii's Jubair Sheikh was at a panel event to discuss how AI is making Canada's agrifood sector more sustainable and efficient. Watch the full panel.
• The 2023 Cleantech Investment Summit is back, hosted by Startup TNT in partnership with Foresight Canada. Applications close on January 24.
• Amii's Britt Ayotte and Andre dos Santos helped celebrate and answer questions at 2SLGBTQ+ STEM Day at Telus World of Science.

• At our November AI Meetup, Neil C Borle explored the challenge of predicting future blood glucose levels for type 1 diabetic patients.
• In his AI Seminar, Google Brain researcher Bo Dai presented on the power of representation-based reinforcement learning.
• What kind of impact could AI models like ChatGPT have on the future of journalism? Amii Fellow and Canada CIFAR AI Chair Lili Mou talked with Broadcast Dialogue about the opportunities and limitations.
• Check out the advancements in artificial intelligence, machine learning and reinforcement learning Amii researchers presented at this year's NeurIPS conference.

• The Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta is looking for two Assistant Professor positions in the broad area of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
• Apply for a postdoc position with Amii Fellow Russ Greiner on a project to develop tools that apply statistical analysis and machine learning to determine a characteristic structure within multiple early warning signals driven by a disease outbreak.
