Amii Monthly News - June 2023

I wanted to thank everyone who helped make Upper Bound 2023 a success. 

It was great to see so many people coming together to share the latest in artificial intelligence and how much promise it has to help us tackle pressing problems. 

If you missed out or just want to rewatch a session, we now have the recordings up on our Youtube channel. 

Some of my favourite stories we heard at Upper Bound were from startup owners who are using AI to change the way they do business. 

If you came out of Upper Bound inspired, or have FOMO, and want to dive into how artificial intelligence can benefit your startup, we’ve got two programs starting soon that can help you out.

The Machine Learning Exploration program is aimed at startups that want to get their business AI-ready in five weeks. It’s free, online and can help you learn how AI can directly impact your business.

The Level-Up program is for startups with machine learning as a core part of their product and who want to scale up their ML capabilities. 

Applications for both programs are open for the next few weeks. We’d love to see you take part!

Community & Industry Updates

• Thanks to everyone who helped make Upper Bound a success this year! We brought more than 800 AI enthusiasts to Edmonton with our Talent Bursaries.
  
• We've uploaded the recorded sessions from Upper Bound, so you can enjoy them again — or for the first time. 
  
• You know who did have a great time at Upper Bound? Marvin The Meatball. Check out some of the spherical social media star's adventures throughout the week. 
  
• Last year, Amii signed the United Way's Period Promise, providing free menstrual products for employees, members, guests, clients, and the public. We encourage others to sign the Pledge too.

Research Updates

• Amii researchers presented a paper at this year's AAMAS conference using machine learning to make robots more efficient in Attabotics Inc.'s robotic 3D warehouses.
  
• Congratulations to Puyuan Liu, a recent MSc. grad supervised by Amii Fellow and Canada CIFAR AI Chair Lili Mou, who won the 2023 Best Master's Thesis Award from the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Association.
  
• We held a Duckietown Demo at Amii HQ during Upper Bound. It's a platform for autonomous machine research and education that allows students to investigate complex behaviours and tackle real-world challenges.
  
• In the latest AI Seminar, Brett Daley proposes a unifying framework for per-decision and trajectory-aware methods.
  
• Congrats to Amii Fellow and Canada CIFAR AI Chair Osmar Zaïane, who won best paper at the Canadian AI conference for his work on Preferential Smoothing.

Training Updates:

• Gain a basic, high-level understanding of what’s important and relevant in machine learning with our ML Foundations 1 course. Applications are now open for the July 6 course.
  
• Build on that knowledge with ML Foundations 2, which introduces you to tools, strategies and knowledge regarding data and ML. Join the July 13 class now. 
  
• Get your startup AI-ready in five weeks with the ML Exploration program, offering workshops, check-ins, coaching, and self-directed work times. Apply before June 28 for the July cohort.
  
• Ready to take your startup's use of machine learning to the next stage? Level Up is our year-long CTO coaching program that helps startups make better ML decisions faster. Applications close July 8.
