Jill Kowalchuk - Manager, AI Literacy

Upper Bound 2025 is just around the corner, and I couldn’t be more excited. This will be my third year attending, and this time, I’ve had the opportunity to help program the AI Literacy and Education Track. If you know me, you know how passionate I am about AI literacy and the ethical implications of AI in teaching and learning, which is exactly why I am pursuing a PhD on the topic.

Over the past two and a half years at Amii, I’ve been fortunate to work with and learn from educators, system leaders, researchers, and industry professionals who are deeply committed to understanding AI’s role in education. That community has helped shape this track, which brings together thought leaders from across Canada to share practical insights, ethical considerations, and innovative approaches to AI integration.

A few sessions I’m especially looking forward to include:

  • Dr. Sarah Elaine Eaton’s session on the Postplagiarism Era, unpacking how digital culture is transforming our understanding of originality and academic integrity in the age of GenAI.

  • Dr. Phil McRae and Dr. Geoffrey Rockwell’s fireside chat where they will dive into the importance of AI literacy in an increasingly AI-mediated world.

  • Chris Gilmour, Shannon Bennett, and Dr. Mohammad Keyhani’s masterclass on building custom GenAI tools in schools, sharing how educators can co-develop practical, localized solutions.

And I can’t forget the sessions I’m directly a part of where I will be co-presenting with Katina Papulkas on the Dell and C21 national K–12 AI Use Case Project, and with Jon Thomas on how school boards are navigating the impact of AI on policy.

Other sessions will explore topics like AI in post-secondary classrooms, the future of work, teaching data literacy through basketball, and reimagining computing science and robotics education. All are aimed at increasing your AI literacy!

Whether you work directly in education, or simply curious about where AI is taking us, this track offers a range of entry points to engage, reflect, and connect.

You still have time to join Alona and thousands of others at Upper Bound. Use the discount code SAVE50 to save $50 off your conference pass - but only until April 30.
