For over two decades, Amii has supported the growth of Alberta’s AI ecosystem by advancing research, driving adoption, and connecting local innovation to the global stage. Today, that work enters an important new chapter.

This $50 million investment over five years from the Alberta Government will help Amii expand its impact and accelerate the economic and societal benefits of AI across the province. Through this funding, Amii will support Alberta's long-term vision for innovation and competitiveness by helping Albertans develop AI skills, enabling organizations to adopt AI responsibly, supporting the commercialization of Alberta-made innovations, and advancing the world-class research that underpins future breakthroughs.

This new investment builds on Alberta's first Technology and Innovation Strategy (ATIS 1.0). To date, through ATIS 1.0, Amii has worked with 786 companies to adopt or advance AI, supported 318 startups, and impacted 1.2 million individuals through its AI literacy programs.

It is also a direct vote of confidence in Amii, a global centre for AI research in reinforcement learning, one of Canada’s three national AI institutes and home to some of the best minds in the field—including Turing Award winner Dr. Richard Sutton.

Artificial intelligence is one of the defining technologies of our time, and Alberta continues to demonstrate global leadership in its development and application. This investment enables Amii to strengthen the foundations of Alberta’s AI ecosystem by supporting startups, accelerating AI adoption across industry and the public sector, and building the AI literacy needed to prepare the workforce of the future. Together, we are ensuring Alberta remains a destination for AI talent, innovation, and investment while creating lasting economic and societal benefits for Albertans.

Cam Linke

CEO, Amii

Alberta has been a leader in artificial intelligence for more than two decades, and Amii has played a major role in keeping us on the top. This investment makes sure that leadership continues, and that the benefits reach people right across our province. When we put AI to work the right way, it means real results for Albertans.

Danielle Smith

Premier of Alberta

"Alberta began investing in AI research more than two decades ago. That early bet paid off. Today Amii is home to some of the best minds in the field, including Dr. Richard Sutton, a winner of the Turing Award, computing's highest honour. This $50-million investment is a vote of confidence in that team. It will put AI to work for the people of this province: better healthcare, faster public services, and more Alberta companies solving real problems. When Alberta leads in AI, every Albertan benefits.

Nate Glubish

Minister of Technology and Innovation

Alberta's universities and research institutions have made our province a global leader in AI. As these skills become essential across the workforce, this investment in Amii ensures our students graduate ready to lead.
