Hi there,
This summer, Edmonton welcomes the global reinforcement learning community for two major events.
First, we welcome hundreds of eager students and professionals to Amii HQ, as we host this year’s CIFAR Deep Learning Reinforcement Learning Summer School (DLRLSS).
They’ll be learning about the latest advancements and applications in reinforcement learning (RL) and deep learning. Over those twelve days, participants will get a chance to learn from two of the world-class machine learning researchers here at Amii: Fellow and Canada CIFAR AI Chair Martha White — who is bringing leading-edge RL to the real world as a co-founder of RLCORE— and Fellow and Canada CIFAR AI Chair Rich Sutton, winner of the 2024 A.M. Turing Award for his work in building the foundations of RL.
For more than twenty years, we’ve been leaders in reinforcement learning research. And now, the world is seeing the huge impact it can have in areas such as healthcare, industrial control, and energy. We’re excited to host this year’s DLRLSS, helping build Canada’s AI ecosystem and training the machine learning leaders of the future.
And right after DLRLSS wraps up, Edmonton will be welcoming more of the top minds in RL to the Reinforcement Learning Conference at the University of Alberta. This year’s conference features speakers from Amii, as well as DeepMind, MIT, Mila, and more. It is a chance to share some of the fascinating advancements that are happening in RL science right now, and we’re proud to be a supporter of the conference.
I believe that reinforcement learning will have a great impact on both Canada and the world in the near future, and at Amii, we’re excited to be a key player in shaping that future.
See you soon,
July Highlights
Community & Industry Updates:
Reinforcement learning is defining the next era of artificial intelligence. Amii CEO Cam Linke shared with Forbes why RL is so important and what it means for business.
Part of unlocking RL's potential is closing the AI skills gap. Cam also spoke to TheHub.ca about why AI literacy will be so vital for Canada's economy in the near future.
The University of Alberta was recently ranked as Canada's #1 university for AI! Amii is proud to be a key partner in building Alberta's world-leading AI ecosystem.
We got a chance to see how AI is changing the way we work and create at this year's Upper Bound conference. We've pulled together insights from how AI is transforming areas like startups and creativity.
Our Flash Sale is still on! Secure your Upper Bound 2026 ticket at its absolute lowest price now, with a full refund option until 60 days before the event."
Research Updates:
LLMs are increasingly becoming integrated into our daily lives. But have you ever wondered where they came from? Amii Fellow & Canada CIFAR AI Chair Alona Fyshe explores the often-overlooked evolution of LLMs and how small advancements made huge impacts.
Turning RL research into real-world impact: CIFAR highlighted how the work of Amii Fellows and Canada CIFAR AI Chairs Adam White and Martha White is now being used to build adaptive AI for water treatment facilities.
On the latest episode of Approximately Correct, Amii Fellow and Canada CIFAR AI Chair Matthew Guzdial talks about his work on computational creativity and using AI to help people achieve their creative goals.
Training Updates:
ML Foundations 1: Learn the basics of AI. Next class: Aug. 7
ML Foundations 2: Build on the basics. Next class: Aug. 14
AI Ethics 1: Learn AI Governance best practices. Next class: Sept. 18
AI Ethics 2: Turn principles into practice. Next class: Oct. 16
Events
Reinforcement Learning Conference (RLC)
Aug. 5 - 8
The Reinforcement Learning Conference (RLC) provides a dedicated venue for reinforcement learning (RL) researchers to share their latest discoveries, exchange ideas, and collaborate in a focused, intimate setting.
Unlike larger AI conferences, RLC is designed specifically to RL research.
ALL IN AI Conference
Sept 24 - 25
Amii is excited to be attending All In this year in Montréal.
Come say bonjour to us if you're there!
ALL IN embodies a bold vision for the future of AI, bringing together leaders from the Canadian and international ecosystems to shape innovation and collaboration in this strategic sector.
