Amii is proud to collaborate with the Edmonton Public School Board (EPSB) in the inaugural Student AI Conference on April 30 at the Fantasyland Conference Centre. Building on Amii’s strong foundation of AI research, knowledge translation and community impact, the conference will directly engage students, providing them with invaluable opportunities to connect with leading AI experts from Amii. By offering hands-on activities and diverse learning pathways, from beginner introductions to deeper dives into AI concepts like model programming, the conference aims to equip students with a foundational understanding of AI and its potential impact on their future.
Amii Fellows Bailey Kacsmar, Adam White, and Geoffrey Rockwell will be delivering breakout sessions, while Matt Taylor will be available at an on-site booth. Matthew Guzdial will be providing the keynote address on how AI can help support and empower human creativity.
"This conference showcases Amii and EPSB’s shared dedication to empowering the next generation with AI literacy beginning in K-12 classrooms," stated Jillian Kowalchuk, Amii’s AI Literacy Manager. "Teachers will gain crucial insights into student AI engagement and curriculum integration, while students will learn directly from leading researchers, demystifying complex concepts and envisioning future skills. We hope that students leave with a deeper understanding of AI's impact and the skills needed to thrive."
From Pilot to National Reach: Amii’s K-12 AI Literacy Leadership
As leaders of artificial intelligence education, Amii recognizes the critical need to equip educators with the knowledge and resources to navigate this rapidly evolving landscape. Spearheaded by Kowlachuk, Amii's K-12 literacy program has grown from a successful pilot in 2023 involving approximately 80 high school teachers focused on interdisciplinary resource development, to impacting an estimated 50,000 students across Canada, primarily in Alberta. This initial success paved the way for an elementary school pilot in 2024-2025, engaging over 100 teachers in co-creating AI literacy resources for their classrooms. Through focus groups and ongoing professional development opportunities, Amii has fostered a community of practice, supporting nearly a thousand teachers in understanding and integrating AI concepts into their teaching.
