Health Innovation Lab

A Partnership Between Amii and the Government of Alberta to Advance Healthcare with AI

Transforming Healthcare With the Alberta AI Advantage

The Health Innovation Lab is an initiative delivered by Amii with support from Alberta’s government to accelerate the development, testing and adoption of artificial intelligence and data-driven health solutions. Designed to move innovation from concept to real-world implementation, the Lab will support projects that leverage centralized health data, advanced computing infrastructure and AI expertise to address some of the health system’s most pressing challenges. The Health Innovation Lab will enable innovators to develop solutions that improve patient outcomes, reduce wait times and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery across Alberta.

The initiative is intended to utilize the strength of Alberta’s leadership in artificial intelligence and support commercialization, intellectual property development and long-term economic growth. By bringing together researchers, clinicians, industry and government, the Health Innovation Lab will help ensure Alberta-developed innovations create meaningful and lasting benefits for both the healthcare system and Albertans.

Quick facts:

  • A total of $10 million in funding, over three years, will be invested in the Health Innovation Lab.

  • Up to 12 projects will be supported annually, focused on developing, scaling and commercializing AI-enabled health solutions.

  • Projects will be selected from proposals submitted to Amii in alignment with the Alberta government’s health system priorities.

Through the Health Innovation Lab, Amii is bridging excellence in research with excellence in care. By translating our world-leading AI into clinical tools, we are empowering clinicians and patients to achieve an outsized impact. This allows us to apply our deep technical expertise directly to the province’s health priorities—ensuring Alberta-made innovation drives both economic growth and a better healthcare experience for everyone.

Artificial intelligence has the potential to transform how healthcare is delivered, but only if we move innovations out of the lab and into real-world use. This investment ensures Alberta innovators can work responsibly with health data to deliver solutions that improve care for patients, strengthen our health system and create long-term economic value for the province.
