When Amii was founded in 2017, it set out to answer a difficult question: How do you turn nearly 15 years of world-class academic research into a living, breathing demonstration of AI for good and for all? Our founding team knew that Edmonton was home to some of the brightest minds in artificial intelligence, especially reinforcement learning.
But we also knew that brilliant papers alone don’t change the world. People do.
Five years ago, we wanted to celebrate the people who began the legacy of AI in Edmonton, in recognition of the 20th anniversary of the University of Alberta's initial AI research group. The precursor to Upper Bound was born in AI Week, serving as the first in-person gathering of our researchers and student community following the pandemic. We welcomed 475 attendees to our brand-new Amii HQ, with the paint still drying, to explore AI adoption, while concurrently running an academic seminar at the Edmonton Convention Centre. It felt like a monumental moment, and we frankly had no idea what was in store for us over the next four years as our approach to an AI conference built momentum and a unique identity.
The rapid growth and success of the conference are due to the AI community's trust in us to build an experience that puts shared values first, demands excellence, and isn't afraid to create a conference that doesn’t look, feel, or function like any other.
Now, Upper Bound is a premier national AI gathering, on track to welcome 8,000 guests this year, truly like no other in the world. The rapid growth and success of the conference are due to the AI community's trust in us to build an experience that puts shared values first, demands excellence, and isn't afraid to create a conference that doesn’t look, feel, or function like any other.
We swing big at Upper Bound (in all the ways). So, what are the strategic pillars of Upper Bound that we cultivate, fiercely protect and double down on?
The Radical Integration of the AI Stack
We bridge the gap between the lab and the street. By seating PhDs alongside VCs, High School Teachers next to Startup Founders, and CEOs next to Ethicists and Policy Makers, Upper Bound creates a unique integrated ground truth. It is the only ecosystem gathering designed to ensure that Canadian AI policy, talent, industry and capital are perfectly aligned for maximum economic sovereignty.
The Nation’s AI Literacy Engine - From Classroom to C-Suite
We aren't just reacting to the workforce gap; we are closing it permanently. By integrating K-12 foundational learning, post-secondary innovation, and aggressive sectoral upskilling, Upper Bound is architecting the world’s most AI-literate generation. This is the end of the brain-drain era; we are providing an actionable blueprint to transform Canada from a talent exporter into a global destination for AI-driven productivity.

Economic Resilience, Venture Capital and a Celebration of Canadian IP
Upper Bound champions the domestic commercialization of Canadian AI. We bridge the gap between breakthrough research and institutional scale, gathering a venture community with $17B in assets under management to back the next generation of Canadian IP. We are building the financial infrastructure required to turn our intellectual advantage into a permanent economic moat.
We know what it truly takes to bring an AI ecosystem to life. The secret isn't just in the algorithms; it’s in the architecture of the community.
In the tech world, we often talk about "scaling" in terms of server capacity or data sets. But the most important thing to scale is human connection. Over the past five years, more than 16,000 members of the AI community - emerging students, veteran researchers, and ambitious business leaders at the forefront of AI adoption - have helped us build this platform. We’ve learned that for AI to realize its promise, we must move past the sit-and-listen model of traditional conferences.
We’ve learned that for AI to realize its promise, we must move past the sit-and-listen model of traditional conferences.
This means prioritizing shared experiences over passive consumption. When we designed the environment for Upper Bound, we wanted to break the daily routine. We use AI-facilitated matchmaking, immersive audio, a massive, transformative environment, and we schedule core conference events throughout the downtown core to spark serendipity.
These are the kinds of accidental meetings between a Startup Founder and a PhD Student, a Cabinet Minister and a Grade Three Teacher, or a VP of Human Resources and a Recent Grad that lead to the next great workflow improvement, a new business model, a collaboration, or even Canadian-led research breakthroughs. But we don’t leave that to chance at Upper Bound.
This intentionality matters because the stakes for AI literacy and adoption have never been higher. We are no longer in an era where AI is a future consideration; it is the present reality. However, for AI to be a force for good and accessible to all, it cannot remain behind the closed doors of big tech or elite universities. It must be democratized through professional development, peer collaboration across all fields, widespread literacy and training, and real-world adoption.
In my role, I see the intense demand for access amid a flurry of last-minute requests and a surge of interest as the world wakes up to the urgency of this technology. It is a reminder that while the interest is massive, the window for Canada to lead in AI, where no citizen is left behind, requires proactive commitment.

Upper Bound is our shared vision for that future. It is a place where the ecosystem meets the promise of tomorrow. As we prepare to welcome thousands of attendees back to Edmonton this May, I am reminded that we aren't just checking stage cues or printing t-shirts. We are building a fertile ground for the connections that will define the next five years of innovation.
The future of AI isn't a solo sprint; it’s a shared journey.
And after five years of building, I can confidently say: we are just getting started.
