The Future is Bright: Amii Launches AI for Earth Scholarships to Empower Future Leaders in Meteorology and Earth Sciences

Published

Dec 17, 2025

At a time where our planet faces increasingly complex and extreme weather challenges, the combined power of advanced earth sciences and innovative AI technology represents a key opportunity to integrate smarter, faster, and more effective solutions for climate adaptation. Amii is proud to meet this moment and launch the AI for Earth Scholarships program, supported by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

The scholarship program will award 750 scholarships to Canadian post-secondary students in environmental sciences and meteorology and provide free access to the Artificial Intelligence Literacy Foundations: Environmental Sciences and Meteorology Pre-Professional Development program, designed to build critical AI literacy and applied skills.

This direct support will equip students with the specialized training needed to develop and deploy responsible digital solutions for pressing environmental challenges. Interested students in environmental sciences and meteorology are encouraged to apply here.

Quote from The Honourable Julie Dabrusin, Minister of the Environment, Climate Change and Nature:

“As we continue to experience more frequent and intense extreme weather in Canada, we need innovation to build resilience. By supporting the AI for Earth Scholarship Program, we’re helping future meteorologists and environmental scientists gain the AI skills they need to predict and respond to severe weather events. This is an investment in anticipating and adapting to the environmental challenges of tomorrow, for a more resilient Canada.”

"The dual challenges of a changing climate and the rapid evolution of technology demand a new kind of professional—one who is fluent in both environmental science and the power of machine intelligence.

This partnership with Environment and Climate Change Canada is a strategic investment in Canada’s future. By equipping 750 future professionals with fundamental AI skills, we are ensuring the experts tackling climate change and predicting environmental events are ready to leverage the most advanced tools available."

Addressing the Urgency of Climate Action

2024 was the hottest year on record both globally and for Canada. Canada continues to warm at a faster rate than the globe. This accelerating heat is directly felt through the rising frequency of extreme weather events—from heat waves that increase the likelihood of wildfires and widespread droughts. Responding effectively to these rapid, complex climate threats requires intelligent analytical tools capable of processing vast datasets and predicting cascading events with speed and accuracy.

Strategic AI Solutions for Priority Climate Challenges

With vast data sets and the ever-changing nature of weather systems, AI is a tool that can directly address three priority areas of climate management.

  • Safety and Disaster Management: AI can offer earlier, more accurate extreme weather warnings, enabling proactive emergency response through faster analysis and predictive power.

  • Resource Management and Planning: By integrating billions of daily data points from satellites and sensors, AI can generate highly granular, localized forecasts to optimize power grids, manage water reserves, and inform efficient agriculture.

  • Understanding and Adapting to Climate Change: AI accelerates scientific insight by identifying patterns and correcting biases in historical data, directly improving long-term climate modeling and strengthening national adaptation strategies against intensifying heat and disaster risk.

Harnessing the vast potential of the AI is key to a more resilient future, and the AI for Earth Scholarships program is specifically designed to cultivate the expertise needed to build it. Amii aims to empower environmental professionals with the AI literacy and applied skills they need to become AI-confident enough to use AI as a powerful analytical tool that transforms colossal, noisy climate data into actionable intelligence necessary to predict and effectively respond to the intensifying impacts of climate change.

AI for Earth Scholarship: Program Curriculum and Impact

The curriculum is specifically designed for students in earth sciences and meteorology to ensure practical and immediate applicability to the demands of the workforce, including the public sector.

Program Highlights

  • Curriculum: Participants will have access to two foundational workshops — ML Foundations 1 and ML Foundations 2 — as well as 10 specialized learning assets tailored to their fields.

  • Format: All training is delivered through asynchronous workshops and learning assets on a Learning Management System (LMS), offering maximum flexibility for students.

  • Recognition: Upon completion, students will receive formal recognition of their competencies through a digital badging system.

Why Work with Amii

The AI for Earth Scholarship Program builds on Amii’s long-standing track record of providing best-in-class AI literacy training to more than 250,000 individuals worldwide. It is the most recent addition to Amii-led Canadian Sovereign AI initiatives, including AI Pathways: Energizing Canada’s Low-Carbon Workforce, a new initiative supported by the Government of Canada’s Sustainable Jobs Training Fund, the AI Literacy for Everyone platform, and K-12 AI Literacy.

Amii is committed to ensuring AI is developed and deployed responsibly so Canadians can make informed decisions and engage with a positive AI future. The AI for Earth Scholarship is available now to post-secondary students ready to lead that transformation and write the next chapter for Earth Sciences in Canada.
