The Challenge

Canadian agriculture is under increasing pressure. The agricultural sector is Canada’s economic backbone, generating over $140 billion annually and supporting 1 in 9 jobs nationwide. Farmers face mounting demands to produce more under increasingly tough conditions. In an environment where every dollar counts, inefficient practices like unguided seeding and fertilizing can waste over $40,000 per farm every year. 

The Approach

Amii partnered with Saskatchewan-based Croptimistic Technologies, on hands-on AI Strategy and Development to identify and build a high-value roadmap and custom AI solution for better detection of early season cereal crops. 

In their crucial early growth stages, overlapping leaves form a thick canopy makes it difficult for standard algorithms to distinguish individual plants, evaluate crop health, and deliver timely recommendations when farmers need them most. To address this, Amii worked with Croptimistic to tackle a major computer vision hurdle of analyzing dense, narrow-leaf cereal crops like wheat and oats for better crop detection and resource allocation during critical early-season periods. 

Expanding on this foundation, the team engineered specialized narrow-leaf models that train vision algorithms to navigate visual barriers like wind, dust, and glare, unlocking precise crop analysis for early-stage cereal grains. 

The Outcome

Amii provided the technical framework required to navigate real-world agricultural data challenges, such as inconsistent field labels and dense canopy overlap. By putting world-class machine learning directly into growers' hands, Amii and Croptimistic are helping growers save time, optimize resources, and maximize yields.
