I hope you’ve had a great summer!

We’ve had a busy month here at Amii as we prepare for a buzzing fall season. 

One of the things I’m excited for is Scale AI’s ALL IN 2023 in Montreal from September 27-28. It’s shaping up to be an incredible event dedicated to everything going on in Canadian AI. Amii will be there, and we hope to see you there too!

ALL IN is a unique opportunity to bring together leaders and innovators in Canadian AI: startups and investors, industry players and leaders from research and academia. I’ll be part of a panel alongside our friends at CIFAR, MILA and Vector, so be sure to catch that. And you can connect with me and other Amii folks at the Amii Lounge.

ALL IN is a great place to learn about the potential of artificial intelligence. And if you’re a startup, another great way of exploring how AI can help you is our Machine Learning Exploration program. This free, five-week course enables you to discover how machine learning can impact your business and reach your goals. 

Applications for the program are now open.

• We've partnered with Tourism Jasper to build AI capacity to optimize tourism while protecting the environment in one of the most breathtaking places on earth
• Congratulations to Deal Closer, an Amii alum, for securing $2.5M USD in funding!
• Russ Erickson, our VP of Investment and Partnerships, will be talking about AI and the future of accounting careers with CPA Alberta on September 13.
• Mara Cairo, product owner of Amii's Advanced Tech team, shares her career journey and insights on harnessing AI's potential with the Tech Talks Daily podcast.

• Four of our Amii scientists share their thoughts on this year's Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition conference. Check out their two-part series on the latest advancements in computer vision. 
• Amii Fellow & Canada CIFAR AI Chair Matthew Guzdial joined CBC Radio's The Eyeopener to discuss growing calls to regulate AI development. You can hear the full interview here. 
  
• Our researchers presented 17 papers at this year's 40th annual International Conference on Machine Learning. Learn more about their leading-edge work.
• David Reid, the Lead Machine Scientist on Ami''s Industry team, highlighted Edmonton's global AI ranking in a conversation with Edmonton Global. 
• Hallå to Sweden! We recently had a visit from Sveriges Radio, Sweden's public broadcaster. They talked with Matthew Guzdial and Fellow & Canada CIFAR AI Chair Rich Sutton about the past, present and future of artificial intelligence

Training Updates:

• Gain a basic, high-level understanding of what’s important and relevant in machine learning with our ML Foundations 1 course. Applications are now open for the Sept. 7 course.
• Build on that knowledge with ML Foundations 2, which introduces you to tools, strategies and knowledge regarding data and ML. Join the Sept. 14 class now. 
• Get your startup AI-ready in five weeks with the ML Exploration program, offering workshops, check-ins, coaching, and self-directed work times. Applications are open now.

HREBA Canadian Ethics Collaboration 2023

Learn from Amii's own Dr. J. Ross Mitchell at Canadian Ethics Collaboration 2023, hosted by the Health Research Ethics Board of Alberta (HREBA-CC).

Mitchell draws from his experience working to develop AI tools to improve the quality of cancer care to discuss how machine learning can be used in the medical field. He will also explore the potential that emerging AI technologies, like ChatGPT, offer in healthcare settings.
