Amii Monthly News - July 2023

I hope you’re having a great summer with some time to recharge! Cam’s off on a well-deserved break today, and I’m happy to share our monthly Amii update with you.

We have a newly announced partnership with Protein Industries Canada!  

AI and machine learning have tremendous promise to transform the way we grow our food. This partnership with PIC will help companies in the plant-based food, feed and ingredient industries gain a better understanding of their data, improve productivity, optimize production, and empower their teams with in-demand AI skills. 

Applications are open now, with the first cohort set to begin in the fall. If you’re curious about the future of this field, check out this Upper Bound video featuring an update on our work with New Harvest related to cellular agriculture! 

And we’ve just had a record number of applicants for our Kickstart Program, which helps women and gender-diverse individuals build their skills for a career in artificial intelligence.

Community & Industry Updates:

• The Data Readiness Improvement Program is a partnership between Amii and Protein Industries Canada — learn how it will help companies that grow food, feed and ingredients improve their AI preparedness. 
• Did you catch us at Collision? It was great to meet others in the tech community.
• Want a behind-the-scenes look at how machine learning is changing supply chains? Check out the video of our "ML in Action" talk with Routeique from Upper Bound.
• AI4Good recently had its demo day, where teams show off their machine learning projects that address a social good.

Research Updates:

• Amii Fellow and Canada CIFAR AI Chair Marlos C. Machado gave the keynote at this year's Upper Bound. Watch his talk on where reinforcement learning currently is and the bright future he sees for it. 
• Marlos also has written a blog post on a paper he wrote with Martin Klissarov on option discovery in RL. 
• Check out this article from CIFAR that imagines how AI will impact our daily lives in 2063, including Amii Fellow and CIFAR AI Chair Nidhi Hegde talking about AI fairness.
• Amii Fellow and Canada CIFAR AI Chair J. Ross Mitchell was on QR Calgary recently to discuss how AI can drive healthcare innovation and help patients.

Training Updates:

• ML Foundations 1 teaches you a basic, high-level understanding of what’s important and relevant in the world of machine learning. Join our next class on Aug 3.
• ML Foundations 2 continues to build on that knowledge by introducing you to tools, strategies and knowledge regarding data and ML. Sign up for the Aug 10 class.
• We had more than 300 people apply for this year's Kickstart program! A new record! Thanks to everyone who applied, and we're looking forward to getting started in August. 

Career Opportunities

• Amii is looking for a postdoctoral fellow to work with the Amii Fellows in multiple areas of AI research.
• We're also looking for a postdoctoral fellow to work on a project related to Machine Malfunction Prediction and  Machine Adaptation using Machine Learning. Find out more!
• We have an opening for a machine learning intern to work on a project that involves image classification and detection in plant counting. 
• Amii's Investments and Partnership team is searching for a BD Operations Associate who is eager to bring their ability to understand and support scalable go-to-market processes.
