Job Purpose & Accountabilities

The Lead Machine Learning Scientist (Lead MLS) drives scientific excellence in the Advanced Technology team and is an active participant in program and product development and delivery, providing insight into their area of expertise and fostering associates and machine learning scientists’ development in the organization. They also support Amii's internal teams as subject matter experts based on their technical specialties and applied machine learning experience.

The Lead MLS uses their scientific knowledge and applied research experience to direct Amii Industry Partners’ research and development efforts. They bridge the gap between business opportunities and fundamental ML, providing scientific oversight on technical projects. In addition, they advise the team in the definition of ML problems and help the team navigate the development and delivery of the solution. This includes coaching the industry partners and the team through the Machine Learning Process Lifecycle (MLPL). The Lead ML Scientist will also make informed decisions about the data requirements, modelling techniques and methodology, resource identification and evaluation.

In addition to guiding industry partners, the Lead MLS will support fundamental research through partnerships with Amii Fellows and their students, working with one of the world’s best ML departments.

The role focuses on achieving excellence in three principal accountabilities:

  • Program and Product Development: Work in collaboration with a Product Lead to develop all science-related products and services in a dedicated program stream.
  • Industry Excellence: Provide science thought-leadership and guidance in a dedicated program stream or industry area; as well as work with Amii clients to advance their ML projects and capabilities)
  • Research: Support the advancement of ML research

This role will report to the Product Lead of the Advanced Technology team.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the development, ownership, and execution of science-related elements of the program and product roadmap
  • Lead the science program design process in the advanced technology team based on the knowledge and understanding of the clients and technology
  • Act as a functional supervisor to machine learning scientists and associates, review and revise their work, and manage approvals as appropriate
  • Reinforce a path to success by referring to core competencies, key performance indicators, and personal development goals while acting as functional supervisor
  • Encourage and maintain a problem-solving approach to work while acting as a peer coach and collaborator
  • Execute tangible actions to inspire and hold team members to achieve the organization's mission and vision
  • Work in an Agile environment and continuously reviews the business needs, prioritizes, outlines milestones and deliverables, and identifies opportunities and risks
  • Collaborate with Fellows and students on research papers
  • Foster external science relationships to capitalize on opportunities to progress work forward

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Machine Learning or related field with research work on computer vision
  • Solid fundamentals and understanding of machine learning with a deep focus on computer vision
  • 3+ years of experience leading projects in the field of computer vision using deep learning (preferably in the area of image and video construction)
  • Publication record in peer-reviewed academic conferences or relevant journals in the field of computer vision
  • Ability to navigate and communicate complex technical topics to all stakeholders
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
