Gather with the brightest minds in the AI community from Alberta and beyond at Amii’s Virtual AI Meetup!

Learn about the latest tools and techniques in machine learning, and explore topics that researchers and industry professionals are thinking about or working on.

This month's meetup is a panel discussion on the topic of tackling healthcare projects using federated learning. Moderated by Payam Mousavi, Amii's Applied Research Scientist, the panel features three Amii co-authors of Federated learning enables big data for rare cancer boundary detection, a paper recently published in Nature.

Federated learning is a method of decentralized ML which enables many individual collaborators to contribute to training AI models without exposing their data. The paper details the first application of federated learning to real-world medical imaging data, a collaboration between the University of Pennsylvania, Intel and 71 research sites around the globe.

This special panel session will cover the purpose, benefits and drawbacks of federated learning in a healthcare setting.

Meet our panellists:

  • Ross Mitchell (Amii Fellow) is currently a professor in the Department of Medicine and the Senior Program Director of Artificial Intelligence Adoption with AHS. He has been working in the fields of biomedical imaging, artificial intelligence, and machine learning for 30 years, including work at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute and the Mayo Clinic.
  • Ruchika (Amii Associate Machine Learning Scientist) has applied machine learning algorithms to address various challenges in evidence-based personalized oncology such as tumor detection, generalized nuclei segmentation, survival, and treatment outcome prediction for cancer patients. She has also co-organized two international competitions on computational pathology focused on nuclei segmentation and classification.
  • Neeraj Kumar (Amii Machine Learning Educator) has an extensive academic background. Prior to joining Amii, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Computing Science department at the University of Alberta, a Research Associate with Case Western Reserve University, and a Research Scientist in the Department of Pathology at the University of Illinois. His research interests include AI for digital healthcare and personalized medicine, computational pathology, medical image and signal processing.

Join us virtually for Amii’s monthly AI Meetup and be a part of building Alberta’s growing AI community!
