JUNO Talks: Autonomously Adaptive Soundscapes for Reducing Stress in Critically-Ill Patients

When
March 6, 2023 - March 7, 2023
12:15-12:45pm MT
Where

Online & at Amii HQ (10065 Jasper Ave, 2nd Floor)

A special presentation from Amii as the first official AI sponsor of the JUNO Awards

On March 6, discover how Amii researchers are combining artificial intelligence and soundscapes to comfort critically-ill patients.

The stress and anxiety common in critically ill patients can compromise recovery and survival and increase the length and costs of hospital stays. Patient-specific music and sound therapies have been shown to be highly effective in countering stress, not to mention low-cost, non-invasive, and with far more limited side effects than medications.

Learn how this research team, co-led by Amii Fellow and Canada CIFAR AI Chair Osmar Zaïane, is combining their expertise in music, computer science, and health sciences to induce relaxation, improve sleep, and reduce agitation, anxiety and delirium for patients in the ICU.

This free event is appropriate for all ages. A short Q&A will follow the presentation.

Attend in-person at Amii HQ in downtown Edmonton or click the bell on the livestream to be notified when the event begins.

Presented by:

Michael Frishkopf (Principal Investigator), Professor of Music, Director of the Canadian Centre for Ethnomusicology, Adjunct Professor of Medicine, Lead for International Indigenous Medicine at the Integrative Health Institute, Sound Studies Institute affiliated researcher, and Precision Health Engagement Committee member.

Osmar Zaiane (Co-PI), Amii Fellow, Canada CIFAR AI Chair, and Professor at the University of Alberta in the Department of Computing Science specializing in artificial intelligence; machine learning; data mining; information extraction & visualization; content-based information retrieval; social network analysis; natural language processing; medical informatics; bioinformatics

Martha Steenstrup (team member), Adjunct Professor of Computing Science, with research focused on asynchronous, distributed, adaptive algorithms - including trial-and-error learning algorithms - for control, with formal training in computer science (PhD), mathematics, and music composition.
